Backing Up Data

  1. In order to backup data from an Asset we use Beyond Compare which we either need to install on the Asset, or in most cases should already be installed. We will also need an external drive or some type of storage to backup the files to.
  2. Connect the external drive to the Asset.
  3. Open Beyond Compare, where you will land on a page with several options. For backing up data we will use the Compare option.
  4. Once that opens, click on the folder option next to the directory field, or type the directory you are trying to backup onto the external drive.
  5. The directory on the left will be what we are backing up from the Asset and the one on the right will be what we are backing up to.
  6. After both directories are open, we will now select what files from the Asset we are pulling over.
  7. After selecting the desired files/folders, we will right click and select Synchronize.
    1. You will be given several options, for this example where the external drive is on the right, we will select Update Right
    2. A window will open showing a preview of the selection, at the top there will be a button with the option of synchronizing just what is selected.
      1. Select this if you have already selected what you want to move over.
      2. Unselect tis if you desire to move the entire directory you are in over.
    3. Once you are ready, select Sync on the window and the backup process will begin.
  8. When moving large files/folders, Beyond Compare usually has a tendency to stop responding.
    1. If this happens, you can let it sit for a very long time, or if there are multiple large directories you are moving over, it is recommended you move only a couple at a time.
  9. Once the Synch is finished, safely eject the drive and unplug the external hard drive.
